Why did I start my blogging career with Blogger or Blogspot?
My straight answer would be, I was a beginner and I had no idea where to start blogging. So I wanted to take advantage of the internet where I could get a free blogging platform. This was the primary reason I started my career with Blogspot.
My first blog in blogger.com was an ‘online jobs‘ niche and it was designed with the very traditional format like, ‘mywebsite.blogspot.com’ subdomain. It clearly shows that I was not the owner of this blog or website. The ultimate owner is Blogspot (blogger.com). So I have limited control on my blog.
Even I was not allowed to change the layout and appearance as well. The only achievement was, I started my first blog and it was live on the internet.
Slowly, I started writing many articles about work from home jobs and technical stuff. But I could NOT see my pages were performing well on the search results.
I eventually got to know that having a custom domain is the only option to take my blogging career to the next or top level. And then I moved my blogging career to Google’s Domain. I purchased a domain name from Google Domain. My blogging lifestyle changed here.

I started my first blog in 2010 and I didn’t know what I was going to do actually with my blog. But I built my blog, because the Blogspot platform is a free blogging platform.
Don’t take as an example what I did.
If I could go back, I would have NOT wasted my precious time with Blogspot. Instead, I would have bought my own domain and web hosting. With that said, if you’re really serious about building a website and starting an online business then avoid Blogspot and start building a brand with custom domain and hosting.

This isn’t like a theorem or hypothesis. Just go to Google search and look for some information (ANYTHING) and let me know if you find a .blogspot.com ranking site.
I know… You NEVER find .blogspot.com site on the top rankings.
Yes, it’s ironic that blogs which are created on Google’s on blogging platform NOT perform well in Google search engine.
You know very well that SEO is already very challenging enough. So don’t waste your precious time by making it very hard on yourself and it’s not possible with Blogspot.

It’s true that the talented bloggers will NOT link to Blogspot blogs. Bloggers are doubtful and not interested in linking out in general.
So the doubtful factor about Blogsopt and your .blogspot.com subdomain will not help you to make high conversions.
When you fail to acquire backlinks, you’ll NOT get succeeded in organic search. Backlinks part is one of the major reasons to avoid Blogspot.
4. Won’t Build Website Authority
In general, one of the most important factors of link building and SEO is to build ‘Website Authority’. Building your website’s authority will make your blog or website to get a higher rank easier.
This is what the top websites like Forbes can easily get first or second rank in the Google search within an hour of publishing.
Most bloggers are NOT ready to link out to the Blogspot blogs. So it’s impossible for your to build website authority. This is one of the main reasons to avoid Blogspot free blogging platforms and focus more on SEO part and build website authority.
5. You’re Not Owner of Your Blogspot Blogs
Do you know who the owner of your content on Blogspot is? Yes, Blogger.com owns your content. You can spend months and years to create valid content and it can be deleted in a second even without your permission, because you don’t have control on your content.
This is more than enough to make a clear decision to avoid Blogspot.
The best part of a custom domain and self-hosted blog environment is, you are the owner of your blog and content.
No one is going to control you or your blog and you’re not going to be restricted by any other company’s policy, terms and conditions.
6. You Must Follow BlogSpot’s Policy, Terms on Conditions
As blogger.com owns your blog and content, so you must follow on their rules, terms and conditions. You have already agreed all during the sign up with Blogspot.

Generally, what do we do once your website gets traffic? Try to make money from blogs…Right?
Bad news follows as:
7. Can’t Monetize Your Blog Traffic
Blogger.com is extremely restrictive when you plan for blog monetization. However, you can use Google AdSense on your blogspot blogs. There are some restrictions against its services and product sales.
You have no way to promote your brand through Blogspot. You have no other option except avoiding Blogspot.
So it’s damn clear that Blogspot sucks your hard work, freedom and SEO strategies.
8. Customization is very Limited
If you’ve used WordPress blog or at least seen WordPress blog’s appearance and performance like layout, designs and UX features, you never leave WordPress blog. These features are not available on the Blogspot platform.
Blogspot has a very limited customization and themes. You can do a little bit of blog customization if you’re a skilled developer.
I tried a lot to change my first blog’s appearance and design, it ended with waste of time and an embarrassment.
I feel really bad that how much time I did waste with Blogspot in my earlier days of blogging.
Still some more reasons to avoid Blogspot yet to come below to avoid blogspot using.
9. Most of the .Blogspot type’s blogs are loaded with Spam
One of the grey hat methods is creating web 2.0 for link building (web 2.0 are called ‘free blogging platforms’.)
Here in the grey hat link strategies, they’ll create a free .blogspot blog and fill some content on there and offer links to their actual website. This is one of the popular and easy way to get backlink, however, it would be an artificial type. Because using web 2.0 grey hat method backlinks are overused tactics in terms of Search Engine Optimization.
Few bloggers may think that getting backlinks from web 2.0 method is really effective. Not at all, Google may penalize your blog at any time.
I’ve seen in my experience that there are many blogs that got penalized by Google for using web 2.0s backlink strategies.
You can check if your blog has any manual action issued against it by checking the manual action history.
If a website or blog has a ‘manual action’ the blog will not be shown in the Google Search Results.
Seriously, moving .blogspot to custom domain is the best way to become a successful blogger.
10. Migrating to a Custom Domain is Nightmare
Most of the people starting Blogspot, because they think they don’t have web development skills. But this is not an acceptable reason, because latest digital technologies helped people to start a blog without having technical knowledge.
Come back to my old story that I’d written many content on my blogspot platform. Now it’s the time to move my blogspot blog to a custom blog and I got to know that a custom blog is always great.
But I had no idea how to migrate the content to a custom hosting blog. Copying data from blogspot and pasting it over custom blogs is a huge headache. However it may tend to lead to some negative seo if any.
Even if you have done your migration from blogspot to WordPress custom hosted blog successfully, still your blog will suffer for a while in terms of SEO performance. 301 redirects are supposed to transfer 100% of SEO performance and site authority, but it won’t happen practically.
These all can be avoided if you start your blogging career with WordPress Custom Hosting blogging.
You cannot do marketing, branding, advertisement and affiliate marketing with blogspot.
11. You’re NOT Fully Dedicated
People will not care much when they get a thing for free of cost. Same way, if you’re using a free blogging platform you’ll not commit yourself completely.
When you lose your money, you’ll get more serious on the tasks. How do I say this? I did not work well when I was blogging with free blogging; however I did not earn much from Blogspot.
I was so active when I decided to buy a custom domain, as I need to pay for hosting every month and annual pay.
Don’t take this a financial advice from me. This was my experience. I started working very actively and seriously when I bought my domain name from “Google Domains“.
Bloggers will work dedicatedly when they pay money for domain and web hosting.
When you spend money for blogging, obviously you’ll look for many ways to make money blogging. This was the key for me to make money from blogging and it worked for me.
12. Lack of Support
Support is one of the major and important factors of all business ventures. Support is the best place of guidance and adding more that it’ll act as a security net.
There is very limited support from Blogspot and existing forums also loaded with basic guides and documentation. Having live support and the latest support document is pretty good. Thankfully, WordPress has online-documentation, chat room and community forums.
My intention is not to provide negative views about Blogspot, just to list out the reasons to avoid Blogspot. I wanted to be honest, when I moved my blogging to Google Domains, my blogging life changed and I was able to start making money from my Google Domain.
